Needles: one 16" circular needle in size #10, one set of double-pointed needles (dpns), also in size #10, cable needle (cn) or dpn for cabling

Notions: tapestry needle

Gauge: 15 stitches = 4 inches
Using circular needle, cast on 78 stitches, place marker, and join in round. Work 6 rows in a ribbing, which goes like so:
Ribbing row: * (k1, p1) five times, k1, p2 *
Once your six ribbing rows are complete, it's time to move to the Tilting Ladder pattern, which comes from page 210 of Barbara G. Walker's A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns. It also goes as follows (after being adapted for the round, of course):
Row 1: * k5, p1, k5, p2 *
Row 2: * k5, p1, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2 *

Rows 3 & 5: * k4, p2, k5, p2 *
Row 4: * k4, p2, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2 *
Row 6: * slide two stitches to cn and hold in back, k2, k2 from cn, p2, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2 *
Rows 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12: repeat rows 3, 4, 5, and 6, then rows 3 & 4 again
Row 13: repeat row 1
Row 14: * (ssk, yo) twice, k1, p1, k5, p2 *
Rows 15 & 17: * k5, p2, k4, p2 *
Row 16: * (ssk, yo) twice, k1, p2, k4, p2 *
Row 18: * (ssk, yo) twice, k1, p2, slide two stitches to cn and hold in back, k2, k2 from cn, p2 *
Rows 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24: repeat rows 15, 16, 17, and 18, then rows 15 & 16 again
Knit rows 1 - 24 once, and then knit row 1 one final time. Now let's begin the decreases!

Decrease row 3: * k2tog, k1, p1, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2 *
Now it's time to switch to your dpns!
Decrease row 4: * k2tog, p1, k5, p2 *
Decrease row 5: * p2tog, k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2 *
Decrease row 6: * p1, k5, p2tog *
Decrease row 7: with yarn in back, slip first stitch in row to the end of your last dpn. Then * k1, (yo, k2tog) twice, p2tog *
Decrease row 8: * ssk, k3, p1 *
Decrease row 9: * ssk, yo, k2tog, p1 *
Decrease row 10: * ssk, k1, p1 *
Decrease row 11: * ssk, p1 *
Decrease row 12: * ssk *
Clip yarn, thread on tapestry needle, and pass through remaining 6 stitches. Pull tight, knot, and bring tail to inside of hat. Tuck in ends. And you're done!!!
