Knitting materials and tools:
Circular or double-pointed knitting needles 9 mm (US 13/UK 00). Use 10 mm if you find yourself a tight knitter.
Lion Brand Wool, Ease Thick & Quick – 20% wool, 80% acrylic. Color of your choice.
Weight Category – 6. Quantity – 140 grams. If you have difficulty to find aforementioned brand of yarn, use something else that will have about 60 m (65 yards) per 100 grams skein.
Knit thick & quick hat size:
Head circumference: Teen/Adult: 53-58 cm (21-23”)
Gauge: 9 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knit stitches:
k – knit
k2tog – knit two together
p – purl
skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done
Wool ease thick & quick hat knitting pattern:
Cast-on
Using the long tail method, cast on 48 sts. Join to knit in the round being careful not to twist stitches. Place a stitch marker.
Knitting hat’s body:
Round 1: [k8, p8] – repeat around.
Repeat Round 1 until the hat measures 25-26 cm for an adult size from the edge.
Shaping hat’s crown:
Round 1: k7, skpo, p6, k2tog, k6, skpo, p6, k2tog, k6, skpo, p6, slip the very last stitch from the left to the right-hand needle, remove the stitch marker, return the last stitch back to the left-hand needle, place the stitch marker back.
Round 2:k2tog (knit together the last stitch of the first round and the first stitch of the second round. After that knit all the knits and purl all the purls – k7, p6, [k8, p6] – twice.
Round 3: k7, skpo, p4, k2tog, k6, skpo, p4, k2tog, k6, skpo, p4, slip the very last stitch from the left to the right-hand needle, remove the stitch marker, return the last stitch back to the left-hand needle, place the stitch marker back.
Round 4:k2tog (knit together the last stitch of the 3rd round and the first stitch of the 4th round. After that knit all the knits and purl all the purls – k7, p4, [k8, p4] – twice.
Round 5: k7, skpo, p2, k2tog, k6, skpo, p2, k2tog, k6, skpo, p2, slip the very last stitch from the left to the right-hand needle, remove the stitch marker, return the last stitch back to the left-hand needle, place the stitch marker back.
Round 6:k2tog (knit together the last stitch of the 5th round and the first stitch of the 6th round. After that knit all the knits and purl all the purls – k7, p2, [k8, p2] – twice.
Round 7: k7, skpo, k2tog, k6, skpo, k2tog, k6, skpo, slip the very last stitch from the left to the right-hand needle, remove the stitch marker, return the last stitch back to the left-hand needle, place the stitch marker back.
Round 8:k2tog (knit together the last stitch of the 7th round and the first stitch of the 8th round. Knit all other stitches.
Round 9: [skpo, k4, k2tog] – repeat 3 times.
Round 10: knit all stitches.
Round 11: [skpo, k2, k2tog] – repeat 3 times.
Round 12: [skpo, k2tog] – repeat 3 times.
Cut yarn leaving 10-15 cm tail. Use a hook or tapestry needle to pull the yarn tail through the remaining 6 stitches. Pull tight to close the hole. Weave in ends.
