Circular or double-pointed knitting needles 3.5 mm (US 4).
Mary Maxim, Mellowspun (3/DK) – 70% acrylic, 30% – nylon 50 grams – 160 meters.

Size: Newborn – 4 months – 36-41 cm (21-22”)
Gauge: 22 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knit stitches:
k – knit
kb – knit through the back loop
k2tog – knit two together
M3 (make three) – insert the needle as if to knit, wrap the yarn around and make a knit stitch without dropping stitch of the left needle, yo, then again insert the needle as if to knit, wrap the yarn around, make a knit stitch and drop the stitch of the needle.
skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.
p – purl
pb – purl through the back loop
p2tog – purl two together
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch

Cast on 77 sts. or any number multiple of 4, plus 3 extra stitches, plus 2 sel s.
Rows 1-4: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.
Row 5: sel s, [kb, pb] – repeat till the end, kb, sel s.
Row 6: sel s, pb, [kb, pb] – repeat till the end, sel s.
Row 7: repeat Row 5.
Row 8: repeat Row 6.
Row 9: repeat Row 5.
Row 10: sel s, p1, [k1, p3] – repeat till the end, k1, p1, sel s.
Row 11: sel s, k1, [p1,k3] – repeat till the end, p1, k1, sel s.

Repeat Rows 10-15 four more times. After that, repeat Rows 10 and 11 until the hat measures 13 cm.
Shaping the crown of a knit baby hat:
Row 1: sel s, p1, [k1, p2tog, p1] – repeat till the end, k1, p1, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, k1, [p1, k2] – repeat till the end, p1, k1, sel s.
Row 3: sel s, k2tog, p2tog, [k1, p2tog] – repeat till the end, k1, p1, sel s.
Row 4:sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat till the end, sel s.
Row 5:sel s, [skpo] – repeat till the end, sel s.
Row 6:sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Cut the yarn, leaving a 30-40 cm tail. Using a yarn needle, thread the yarn tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the opening. With the hat right side out, make a seam by inserting the needle through the front loop of the front piece and the back loop of the back piece. Continue seaming until you reach the bottom. Weave in the ends.
