Size: One size, adult or teen.
Yarn: Cascade 220 Superwash in a nice kitty colour, 1 ball (200 metres).
Tools: One pair of size 5 mm straights for the body/slippers; one pair of size 3.5 mm dpts for the head, ears, and tail; darning needle; embroidery thread and embroidery needle; small amount of scrap yarn for stuffing.
Kitty's Body (aka Slipper, make 2)
Using size 5 mm straights, cast on 29 sts.
(Foot)
Row 1: k9, p1, k9, p1, k9 (wrong side).
Row 2: Knit (right side).
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until piece measures approximately 2.5 inches less than desired finished length ending on the wrong side.
(Toe)
Row 1: p1, [k1, p1] to end of row.
Row 2: k1, [p1, k1] to end of row. Repeat rows 1 and 2 for 1 1/2 inches ending on wrong side row.
Next Row: work ribbing for 7 stitches, slip1, k1 and psso, k1, k2 tog, work 5 stitches of ribbing, slip1, k1 and psso, k1, k2 tog, finish row in ribbing. 25 sts.
Next Row: work ribbing for 7 stiches, p3, work ribbing for 5 stitches, p3, work ribbing for 7 stitches.
Last Row: work 6 stitches, k2 tog, k1, slip1, k1 and psso, work 3 sts, k2 tog, k1, slip1, k1 and psso, finish row in ribbing. 21 sts.
Break yarn. Remove remaining stitches from needle by weaving yarn through and pulling tightly to close and form the toe. Secure firmly. Fold cast on edge in half with right sides together, and sew up the top of the foot leaving just enough space for your foot to go in. Sew up the heel, secure, and turn right side out. Make the second slipper.
Kitty's head (make 2)
Using the 3.5 mm needles, cast on 7 sts.
Row 1: Purl.
Row 2: k1, [m1, k1] to end.
Repeat last two rows once more.
Work 3 rows in stocking stitch.
Next row: k1 [m1, k3] to end.
Work 9 rows in stocking stitch.
Next row: k1, [k2 tog] to end.
Work 5 rows.
Next row: k1, [k2 tog] to end.
Last row: Purl.
Break yarn, thread through remaining stitches and pull tightly. Secure.
Join seam leaving an opening. Stuff and close opening.
Kitty's ears (make 4)
Using size 3.5 mm needles, cast on 5 stitches.
Work 6 rows in garter st.
Row 7: slip 1, k1, psso, k1, k2 tog. 3 sts.
Row 8: slip 1, k2 tog, psso. Cast off.
Kitty's tail (make 2)
This is just a basic i-cord. Using the 3.5 mm dpts, cast on 4 stitches.
Row 1: Knit. Without turning your work, slide the stitches to the other end of the needle.
Row 2: Knit by bringing your yarn behind your work and starting with the first stitch. Give everything a good tug to maintain the shape and tension.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until tail is desired length (3 to 4 inches). Cast off.
Finishing
Attach ears to head. Using embroidery thread, stitch eyes, nose, and whiskers to create the face. Attach head firmly to top of slipper and attach tail to heel. Adjust opening of the slipper if required to ensure a secure fit. Weave in ends and repeat for second slipper.
