You will need:
Hot water bottle – approximately 8 inch wide, 11 inches long, 2.5 inch neck
4mm needles
3 buttons

Guage: 21st = 10cm/4 inches
Terms: 3NBO = 3 needle bind off; st-st = stocking stitch; Rib = 2 knit, 2 purl rib. Inc = increase; st = stitch(es); ssk = slip slip knit, the standard left-leaning decrease; k2tog = Knit 2 stitches together, standard right-leaning decrease.

The back is knit in two pieces, the base and the top.

Back base:

Cast on 34 st.
P 1 row and continue in st-st
Inc 1 st at each end of 2nd, 4th and 6th rows - 42 stitches.
Continue in st-st until piece measures 7 inches, then 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2 repeated) for 10 rows.
Cast off in rib.

Back top piece:

Cast on 42 st
Rib for 3 rows
4th row: (Rib 9 stitches, cast off 2 st) x3, rib 9
5th row: Rib 9 stitches, (cast on 2 st, rib 9) x3 – this creates the buttonholes.
Rib for 2 rows
St-st for 1.5 inches, put on spare set of needles for later.

Front
Knit chart.

Knit around front and back top piece to join in the round.
Knit 3 rows (or however many needed to bring it to the top of the water container part of the hot water bottle, this may vary depending on guage).
Next row: cast off 4 stitches using 3NBO, knit to end of front piece. Cast off 4 stitches using 3NBO, knit to end of back piece.
Next row: cast off 7 stitches using 3NBO, knit to end of front piece. Cast off 7 stitches using 3NBO, knit to end of back piece.
Next row: cast off 4 stitches using 3NBO, knit to end of front piece. Cast off 4 stitches using 3NBO, knit to end of back piece.
2x2 rib for 6 inches to create a folded-down collar for the funnel.

Right Wing:
Cast on 12 st
St-st 14 rows
Ssk at beginning of next and every 4 rows until 9 stitches remain
SSK at beginning of every knit row until 5 stitches remain
Cast off.

Left Wing: As for right, but instead of SSK at the start of the row, K2tog at the end of the row.

To make up: Sew the back base to the front piece, sewing in the wings in position. Sew the wing tips to the front of the penguin’s tummy to stop them flapping around (unless that’s what you prefer, but I found it annoying). Sew the top piece to the front piece, stopping short a row or two before the beginning of the rip. Sew on three buttons underneath the buttonhole spaces. Then insert your hot water bottle and you’re all done.
