Materials:

  • Suggested yarn: Alize Burcum Classic, (100% acrylic, 3.5 oz (100 g), 230 yards (210 m), in the following colors and quantities: "black" 60 (1skein), "green" 210 (1 skein), "light cream" 62 (1 skein), and a few meters of yellow (216).
  • Circular knitting needles, 16" (40 cm) long, sizes US 7 (4.5 mm) and US 8 (5 mm).
  • Double pointed needles (DPNs) set, size US 8 (5 mm).
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Ring stitch marker.

Sizes and measurements:

  • Size S (child size):head circumference = 19" - 21" (48 - 53 cm), height = 8.5" (22.5 cm).
  • Size M/L (adult size):head circumference = 21.5" - 23" (55 - 58.5 cm), height = 9" (23 cm).

Gauge: 20 sts and 20 rounds = 4"x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) in stockinette stitch and knitting needles US 8 (5 mm).

Yardage:

  • Size S: 115 - 120 yards (112- 117 m), approx.
  • Size M/L: 135- 140 yards (125- 130 m), approx.

Knitting Terms:

  • st: stitch.
  • sts: stitches.
  • k: knit.
  • p: purl.
  • ssk: slip stitch, slip stitch, then knit the two stitches together through back loops.

Instructions 

With green yarn and US 7 (4.5 mm) circular knitting needles, cast on 80 (90) sts. Join in the round and knit one round. Don't know how to join in the round?

Put a ring stitch marker at the beginning of rounds, work as follows:

Rib round: k 1, p 1, repeat to end.

Repeat the rib round three (four) more times.

Change to US 8 (5 mm) circular knitting needles while knitting next round. Bind on yellow yarn and work as follows:

Round 1: k 1 in green yarn, k 1 in yellow yarn, repeat to end. Cut off green yarn and bind on black yarn.

Round 2: k 1 in yellow yarn, k 1 in black yarn, repeat to end. Cut off yellow yarn and bind on light cream yarn.

Work the skull pattern as shown in the chart, then cut off light cream yarn. Bind on yellow yarn and repeat round 2 once. Cut off black yarn and bind on green yarn then repeat round 1 once. Cut off yellow yarn. Knit 1 (2) round(s), then purl one round. Knit 1 (2) round(s).

Decreasing rounds:

Round 1: ssk, k 8, repeat to end. [72 (81) sts]

Rounds 2 and4(2, 4, and 6): k to end.

Round 3: ssk, k 7, repeat to end. [64 (72) sts]

Round 5: ssk, k 6, repeat to end. [56 (63) sts]

For Size S:

Round 6: ssk,k 5, repeat to end. (48 sts)

Round 7: ssk, k 4, repeat to end. (40 sts)

Change to DPNs when needed.

Round 8: ssk, k 3repeat to end. (32 sts)

Round 9: ssk,k 2, repeat to end. (24 sts)

Round 10: ssk, k 1, repeat to end. (16 sts)

Round 11: ssk, repeat to end. (8 sts)

For size M\L:

Round 7:ssk,k 5, repeat to end.(54 sts)

Round 8: ssk, k 4, repeat to end.(45 sts)

Change to DPNs when needed.

Round 9: ssk, k 3repeat to end.(36 sts)

Round 10:ssk,k 2, repeat to end.(27 sts)

Round 11: ssk, k 1, repeat to end.(18 sts)

Round 12: ssk, repeat to end.(9 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving a 6" (15 cm) long yarn tail, pull it through all sts and tighten together. Weave in loose ends.
