PATTERN NOTES
[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here.]
This beret is knit in a spiral, with each round shifted one st to the left. For this reason, it is necessary to shift the st marker at the end of every round. When shaping the crown, each round begins with a yarn over followed by a decrease, and ends by knitting into the first yarnover of the round below. It may sound complicated, but it’s easier than you might think and insanely logical.
skp: Sl 1 knitwise, k1, pass slipped stitch over.
sl2 kpo: Sl next 2 sts knitwise, one at a time, to right needle. Knit next st; pass slipped sts, together, over st just knit. Forms a left-leaning double decrease.
DIRECTIONS
Using circular needle, CO 104[112] sts. Place marker and join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist.
K 6 rounds.
Next Round: [P2, k2] to end of round.
Repeat this round 9 times more.
Increase Round: [K2, yo] to last 2 sts, k2. 155[167] sts.
K 1 round.
Begin Spiral Pattern:
The number of sts on the needle is 1 st less than the number needed to complete the last pattern repeat. This is done intentionally, in order to form the spiral pattern. Therefore, to work the last st of the last pattern repeat in each round, remove the marker, k1, and replace the marker. The beginning of the round has just shifted 1 st to the left. Alternately, you may wish to remove the marker, and not worry about the location of the end of the round! It will be helpful to replace the marker before beginning the crown shaping.
Pattern Round: [Yo, skp, k10] to end of round, moving marker as directed.
Repeat this round 32 times more. Each diagonal column of the spiral pattern will have 33 yarn overs.
Shape Crown:
As you shape the crown, continue to shift the marker 1 st to the left at the end of each round. Switch to double-point needles when necessary.
