How to Make a Knit Scrunchie:
Step 1: Cast on Stitches
Making sure to leave an extra long tail to work with, cast on 90 stitches
Step 2: Knit the Scrunchie Fabric
Garter Stitch Scrunchie
Make a knit stitch in each stitch across the row. Turn and repeat making the knit stitches until the knit fabric measures approximately 2 – 3 inches wide, depending on how wide you want the scrunchie to be.
Tip: Keep in mind the width of the scrunchie will be half as wide as the knit fabric is before you fold and finish it off.
Stocking Stitch Scrunchie
Row 1: Into the cast-on stitches, make a knit stitch in each stitch across. Turn the work.
Row 2: In each knit stitch make a purl stitch across the row.
Repeat rows one and two alternating until the knit fabric measures 2 – 3 inches wide, depending on your preference.
Step 3: Assemble the Knit Scrunchie
When the knit fabric of the scrunchie is your desired width, cast off the stitches.
Using Elastic
Fold the fabric in half, so that the right sides are facing out. Stitch across the top side to bring the scrunchie together. Make sure to sew in every stitch, and make sure that the stitches match up as you go.
Then pull the elastic through the open ends. Tie or sew the elastic ends together, at your desired length. Then use a yarn needle to sew the two ends together.
Using a Hair Tie
Fold the fabric in half around the elastic band. Thread a tapestry or yarn needle with yarn and sew the edges together so that the stitches on the long side match up. Be careful to sew each stitch across the top. Then sew the ends together, around the elastic hair tie. Finish off and weave in the ends.
