Materials Worsted-weight yarn:

  • (A) main color, 
  • (B) contrasting color
  • 16-inch circular
  • knitting needle size 8
  • Size 8 double point knitting needles (5)
  • Darning needle

5-1/4" diameter


Pattern

Note

Work two strands together throughout.

This will give the stiffness needed. Knit stitches tightly.

I used two colors but you could use two strands of the same color if you wanted.

Instructions

Work pattern using both color yarns together.

  • Cast on 48 stitches.

Join to form ring being careful to not twist the stitches, knit around.

At the end of the row, place a marker on the needle. Continue knitting in the round for 8 more rows.

Hash Pattern:

Round 1: *K1, P1* around.

Round 2: Knit around.

Round 3: *P1, K1* around.

Round 4: Knit around.

Round 5: *K1, P1* around.

  • Knit 4 more rounds.
  • Purl next round, decreasing 3 stitches evenly around. This becomes the base to help it stand up.
  • *K7, K2tog*, repeat
  • * to * around. (40)
  • *K6, K2tog*, repeat
  • * to * around. (35)
  • *K5, K2tog*, repeat
  • * to * around. (30)
  • *K4, K2tog*, repeat
  • * to * around. (25)
  • *K3, K2tog*, repeat
  • * to * around. (20)
  • *K2, K2tog*, repeat
  • * to * around. (15)
  • *K1, K2tog*, repeat
  • *to * around. (10)
  • *KO, K2tog*, repeat
  • * to * around. (5)
  • Break yarn off long.
  • With darning needle, sew through remaining stitches on needles,
    pull up and weave yarn through to finish.
    Weave in all loose ends.
