Knitted Small Heart

Materials:
Worsted Weight yarn (shown in Paton's wool yarn in red)
Size 7 dpns
Darning Needle

Notes:
Be sure to maintain the same tension and not knit too tightly. Otherwise, you'll get a curly heart.

Row 1: Knit
Row 2: K1, yo, m1, K1
Row 3: Knit (4)
Row 4: K1, yo, Knit to 1 before last stitch, yo, K1
Row 5: Knit (6)
Row 6: Repeat row 4
Row 7: Knit
Row 8: Repeat row 4
Row 9: Knit
Row 10: Repeat row 4
Row 11: Knit
Row 12: Repeat row 4
Row 13: Knit
Row 14: Repeat row 4
Row 15: Knit (You should now have 16 stitches on needle)

Row 16: K1, yo, K2tog, K12, K2tog, yo, K1
Row 17: Knit
Row 18: Repeat row 16
Row 19: Knit

This is where the top of the heart begins...
Right Side:
Row 20: K1, yo, K2tog, K2, K2tog, K1 **Leave the remaining 8 stitches on the other needle for later, turn work and begin the next row that you just did)
Row 21: Knit (8)
Row 22: K1, yo, K2tog x3, yo, K1
Row 23: Knit (7)
Row 24: K1, yo, K2tog x3 (5)
Row 25: Knit
Row 26: K2tog, K1, K2tog (3)
Row 27: K2tog, K1 (2)
Thread yarn through remaining 2 stitches, cut, and weave in. (Use the remaining yarn to round out the heart and fix any spots that need tightening or filling.)

Left Side:
Pick up the remaining 8 stitches on the other dpn...
Row 20: K1, yo, K2tog, K2, K2tog, K1
Row 21: Knit (8)
Row 22: K1, yo, K2tog x3, yo, K1
Row 23: Knit (7)
Row 24: K2tog x3, yo, K1
Row 25: Knit (5)
Row 26: K2tog, K1, K2tog (3)
Row 27: K1, K2tog (2)
Thread yarn through remaining 2 stitches and weave in.

Weave in all ends. Block if desired. The hearts I made were 3" tall by 3 1/2" wide.

To make a garland, simply make as many hearts as desired, then thread them using the length of yarn you desire. You could also knit an I-cord or crochet a chain but I preferred the simplicity and thickness of the plain yarn. Weave through the tops of each heart wherever you would like them placed! Enjoy!
