Knitted Kids Wave Colorwork Hat

Yarn: K & C Alpaca Yarn in Evergreen (Super bulky yarn, 1 skein), Lion Brand Yarn Mandala Thick & Quick yarn in Labyrinth (Super bulky yarn, 1 skein)

Needles: Size US 13 circular, 16-inch knitting needles, and (optional- see note below) size US 15 circular needles, 16-inch

Gauge: 2 inches = 8 sts

Size: hat will fit kids (approximately) 6-10 years old.

Hat pattern instructions:

(Note- Many knitters (myself included) work more tightly when knitting colorwork than stockinette stitch. I switched to the size US 15 circular needles when I started the colorwork [row 6] to maintain the gauge and switch back to the smaller needles after row 20. This may or may not be necessary for you.)

With the smaller needles and the green yarn, cast on 44 sts. Join ends together being careful not to twist the yarn.

Work in K1, P1 rib pattern for 8 rounds.

Round 9: Knit.

Beginning in the lower right corner of the chart, knit every round and change the yarn color following the chart. Knit until all 20 rounds of the chart have been completed.

Shape crown:

(switch to double point needles to decrease when needed or use magic ring (loop) method)

Round 1: Knit 1, *Knit 3, K2 together, repeat from * to last 3 stitches, knit 3.

Round 2: Knit 2, Knit 2, K2 together to the last 3 stitches, knit 3. (27 sts)

Round 3: Knit 1, K2 together across the round (18 sts)

Round 4: Knit 2 together across round.

Finishing: Break yarn and pull through remaining stitches. Pull to tighten and weave in ends. Make and attach pom pom.
